Description of the genus

Deciduous trees. Leaves pinnately compound, leaflets entire, glabrous. Inflorescence axillary clusters or panicles. Calyx with 5 lobes; petals 5, strongly reflexed. Fruit an erect woody capsule, 5-valved, opening from base upwards with woody central core. Seeds numerous, winged.

Derivation of name: after Gerard von Swieten (1700-1772)

Worldwide: 3 species in tropical West Africa, tropical and sub-tropical America.

Mozambique: 1 cultivated taxon.
