Description of the family

Unarmed climbers in forests with woody stems arising from rhizomes with swollen roots. Leaves alternate, sessile, parallel veined. Stipules 0. Flowers in few-flowered axillary cymes. Tepals in 2 whorls of 3, forming a short tube. Stamens in 2 whorls of 3. Ovary 3-locular. Fruit a berry.

Comment: Genera included under Behniaceae are nowadays often placed within subfamily Agavoideae under Asparagaceae. However, we have followed the more traditional treatment for the time being.

Worldwide: 1 genus and 1 species from tropical southern Africa

Mozambique: 1 genus and 1 taxon.
