Description of the family

Annual herbs. Stipules 0. Leaves alternate, simple entire. Inflorescence a dense terminal spike. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic. Calyx-lobes 5. Corolla with 5 imbricate lobes. Stamens 5, alternating with petals. Ovary semi-inferior, 2-locular. Fruit a circumscissile capsule. Seeds numerous.

Worldwide: 1 genus and 2 species, tropics.

Mozambique: 1 genus and 1 taxon.
