Small evergreen trees of mangrove swamps with root systems bearing pneumatophores. Stipules 0. Leaves opposite, decussate, simple, entire. Inflorescences of contracted pedunculate cymes. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic. Calyx deeply 5-lobed. Corolla 4-5-lobed, somewhat fleshy. Stamens 4. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate. Style 1. Fruit a capsule, 1-seeded. Worldwide: 1 genus and c. 7 species in warm regions of the world Mozambique: 1 genus and 1 taxon. |
