Description of the family

Small evergreen trees of mangrove swamps with root systems bearing pneumatophores. Stipules 0. Leaves opposite, decussate, simple, entire. Inflorescences of contracted pedunculate cymes. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic. Calyx deeply 5-lobed. Corolla 4-5-lobed, somewhat fleshy. Stamens 4. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate. Style 1. Fruit a capsule, 1-seeded.

Worldwide: 1 genus and c. 7 species in warm regions of the world

Mozambique: 1 genus and 1 taxon.
