Mostly herbs, less often shrubs or small trees. Stipules 0. Leaves mostly alternate or radical, simple, entire. Flowers zygomorphic, bisexual, borne in axillary spikes, racemes or cymes. Calyx adnate to the ovary, tubular; limb 5-lobed, rarely entire. Corolla 5-lobed, 2-lipped; tube split almost to base. Stamens 5, alternating with the corolla lobes. Ovary inferior or partly so, 1-2-locular. Stigma 2-lobed, surrounded by an apical membrane. Fruit a drupe (in ours). Worldwide: 12 genera and 400 species in tropical and warm regions, mostly Australia Mozambique: 1 genus and 1 taxon. |
