Description of the family
Dioecious, small trees, shrubs or rarely woody climbers. Leaves simple, alternate or opposite with entire margins. Stipules absent. Male inflorescences axillary or of terminal panicles or racemes. Female inflorescences of 1-2-flowered terminal or axillary racemes. Flowers unisexual; actinomorphic with a conspicuous disc. Sepals fused with short lobes. Petals free; white or yellowish. Ovary inferior; carpels fused. Fruit a loculicidally dehiscent capsule or indehiscent. Worldwide: 2 genera and 5 species in Africa and Madagascar Mozambique: 1 genus and 1 taxon. |
