Perennial herbaceous plants adapted to live in shallow sea water. Rhizomes creeping with tuberous nodes. Leaves simple, alternate with entire margins; linear or filiform; lamina parallel-veined, sometimes with a midrib. Inflorescence of 1 to several spadices each enclosed in a spathe formed by the sheath of the next leaf. Flowers unisexual, small, sessile, in two rows on a flattened axis. Petals absent. Stamens 2, fused back to back and appearing as 1. Ovary superior; carpel 1; ovule 1, pendulous. Fruit a small drupe, irregularly dehiscing. Worldwide: 3 genera and 17 species occurring in temperate and subtropical coastal waters. Mozambique: 1 genus and 1 taxon. |
