Description of the family

Trees and shrubs, often accumulating aluminium. Leaves spiral or alternate, simple, usually dimorphic (not in FZ); stipules 0. Flowers small, in axillary racemes or in panicles on leafless shoots. Fruit woody (not in our region) or drupaceous.

Worldwide: 4 genera (2 in Africa) and c. 30 species, in Tropics, America, Africa and Asia.

Mozambique: 1 genus and 1 taxon.
