Description of the genus

Perennials, sometimes with a thickened base. Inflorescence a spike-like panicle. Spikelets 2-many-flowered, laterally flattened, disarticulating above the glumes and between the florets; florets fertile below, reduced above. Glumes 2, unequal to subequal, persistent, subacute to acuminate; lower 1-3-nerved; upper 3-5-nerved. Lemmas exceeding the glumes, 3-5(-7)-nerved, strongly flattened and distinctly keeled, awnless but sometimes mucronate.

Worldwide: c. 35 species in mainly temperate regions of the world; also in montane regions of Africa
