Description of the genus

Perennial herbs or shrubs. Leaves (in ours) dentate. Inflorescences of axillary dichasical cymes. Bracts and bracteoles c. as long as calyx. Calyx lobes 5, ovate. Corolla 2-lipped; upper lip 3-lobed, transversely ribbed on palate. Fertile stamens 4. Capsule with 1 seed in each loculus. Seeds borne on retinacula; with white hygroscopic hairs.

Worldwide: 26 species in tropical and southern Africa with one species extending into Yemen

Mozambique: 4 taxa.
