Description of the genus

Shrubs or suffrutices. Inflorescence a terminal spike; bracts sometimes large with a cordate base; bracteoles 2. Calyx actinomorphic; lobes 5, ± linear. Corolla 2-lipped, bright or pale blue; upper lip ± entire; lower lip 3-fid. Fertile stamens 2, long-exserted; anthers 2-thecous. Ovary with 1-2 ovules per loculus. Capsule subspherical. Seeds flattened, borne on retinacula.

Worldwide: 10 species in Africa and the Arabian peninsula

Mozambique: 2 taxa.
