Description of the genus

Perennial herb (in ours) with erect 4-angled stems. Leaves narrow, linear to lanceolate, with obscure lateral veins. Flowers mostly 4-merous, blue (in ours) in terminal inflorescences surrounded by leafy bracts, never heterostylous; anthers included and style exserted. Calyx lobes 4, linear. Corolla with long cylindric tube and 4 lobes. Ovary 2-locular; ovules numerous. Capsule beaked, bearing persistent calyx lobes.

Worldwide: 9 species in eastern and central tropical Africa and South Africa

Mozambique: 3 taxa.
