Description of the genus

Annuals. Inflorescence strongly condensed with the spikelets borne in dense globular clusters along a central axis, sometimes confluent. Outer spikelets of each glomerule with enlarged lower glume and empty lemmas, thus forming a chaffy involucre. Spikelets strongly laterally flattened, 3-6-flowered, all flowers bisexual; glumes subequal, a little shorter than the spikelet, 1-nerved; lemmas 3-nerved, ciliate on margins and keel, entire, ± awned; palea a little shorter than the lemma, keels narrowly or conspicuously winged.

Worldwide: 2 species in the Old World tropics (Africa, India and Australia)
