Description of the genus

Mostly annual grasses with a false raceme like a bottle-brush. Spikelets 1-flowered; glumes subequal, 1-nerved, tipped by a long slender awn (that of the lower glume usually the longer). Lemma hyaline, 1-nerved, awnless.

Worldwide: 10 species in the Old World tropics

Mozambique: 3 taxa.
