Description of the genus

Annual grass (in ours) confined to shady places in evergreen forests. Inflorescence composed of 1-sided racemes. Spikelets laterally flattened. Lower glume shorter (3/4) to as long as the spikelet. Upper glume gibbous with tubercle-based hooks and sometimes with wings. Upper lemma laterally flattened.

Worldwide: 6 species; 5 confined to Madagascar, the other (P. polystachya) pantropical

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
