Description of the genus

Inflorescence composed of racemes irregularly arranged along a central axis; racemes either long and deciduous or short, persistent and often crowded into a loose head, the spikelets shortly pedicelled, biseriate. Spikelets 3–7-flowered, laterally compressed, disarticulating above the glumes and between the florets; glumes subequal, subcoriaceous, not exceeding the adjacent lemmas, the inferior 1–3-nerved, the superior 3–7-nerved; lemmas 3–7-nerved, lightly keeled, glabrous or pubescent on the margins, 2-toothed and mucronate at the apex; palea gibbous. Caryopsis elliptic, sometimes trigonous in section, with free pericarp.

Worldwide: Species 2, in Mozambique and South Africa.
