Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Inflorescence a delicate panicle with elongated central axis and capillary branches bearing short racemes; racemes of 1-5(-8) sessile spikelets, without homogamous pairs; internodes (of racemes) and pedicels with a translucent, hyaline central line. Sessile spikelets with obtuse callus; lower glume cartilaginous, without pits; lower floret reduced to a hyaline lemma; upper lemma entire with a glabrous or puberulent awn. Pedicellate spikelets usually well developed.

Worldwide: 14 species from eastern Africa, tropical Asia to Australia and New Caledonia
