Description of the genus

Dichotomously branched trees or large shrubs. Leaves borne in rosettes, unspotted; dried leaves not persistent. Inflorescence a branched panicle with cylindric racemes. Flowers cylindric to cylindric-ventricose, without a pronounced constriction above a bulbous basal swelling, yellow, orange or pink to red. Stamens and style straight, usually long-exserted; filaments glabrous. Fruit a loculicidal capsule; seeds numerous.

Derivation of name: from the genus Aloe and the Greek dendron, tree, meaning ‘tree aloe'.

Worldwide: Confined to southern Africa with an outlier species in Somalia.

Mozambique: 2 taxa.
