Description of the genus

Evergreen trees, rarely shrubs. Leaves simple, rarely 3-5 lobed, petiolate. Inflorescence axillary, usually consisting of long-stalked panicles of 3-flowered cymes; middle flower sessile, lateral flowers stalked. Fruit a drupe, enclosed in fused or free bracts.

Derivation of name: after Francisco Hernandez de Toledo (1514-1587), physician to Philip II of Spain and botanist, explorer and collector in South America.

Worldwide: 24 species, pantropical with 1 species occasionally on the east coast of Africa.

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
