Description of the genus
Shrubs, sometimes subherbaceous,or rarely small trees or lianes. Branches more or less 4-angled. Leaves opposite or ternate; margins entire. Inflorescences in axillary or supra-axillary cymes. Flowers normally fragrant; calyx campanulate; Corolla hypocrateriform, white, sometimes pink or purplish; lobes unequal. Stamens 4 or 5; ovary cylindrical; stigma shortly bifid; Fruits generally globose to obovoid. Comment: A group of species formerly placed in Clerodendrum, mainly from tropical coastal habitats, were recently moved to the resurrected genus Volkameria. Worldwide: 10 species more or less Pantropical. Mozambique: 2 taxa. |
