Description of the genus

Shrubs, climbers or lianes, not herbs. Stipules sheathing, adnate to the petiole. Leaves alternate, not fleshy. Inflorescence of axillary or leaf-opposed spikes. Flowers bisexual or unisexual. Perianth 0. Stamens 2-4. Stigmas 2-5. Fruit a 1-seeded drupe.

Worldwide: c. 2000 species in the tropics

Mozambique: 2 taxa.
