Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs, sometimes climbing or scrambling. Flowers solitary or in few-flowered cymes, terminal or extra-axillary. Bracteole 1, usually amplexicaul, persistent, foliaceous. Sepals 3, much shorter than the petals, free. Petals 6, in two unequal whorls, all united at the base; outer broad at base, inner unguiculate. Stamens numerous. Carpels united to form a 1-locular ovary with numerous ovules. Stigmas radiating. Fruit a many-seeded berry. Seeds glossy; aril 0.

Worldwide: 15 species in tropical Africa

Mozambique: 6 taxa.
