Description of the genus

Annual or biennial herbs with yellow latex. Leaves deeply pinnately lobed or incised, spiny. Sepals 3, horned at the apex. Petals 6. Stigma ± capitate at apex, 4-6-lobed.

Worldwide: c. 23 species in North and South America, West Indies and Hawaii.

Mozambique: 2 taxa.
