Description of the genus

Woody lianes, climbing shrubs or small trees. Leaves imparipinnate. Inflorescences of racemes or panicles. Flowers 5-merous. Sepals imbricate; margin ciliate. Petals longer than sepals. Stamens 10. Fruit a slightly curved, glabrous or glabrescent, follicle, with the persistent calyx clasping the base. Seed partially enclosed by the basal aril. Follicles glabrous or almost so.

Worldwide: 40 - 70 species in the tropics

Mozambique: 3 taxa.
