| Dioecious, or rarely monoecious, shrubs or small trees. Indumentum simple. Buds perulate. Leaves alternate, petiolate, simple, subentire to dentate or lobed, palminerved. Inflorescences terminal, interruptedly racemose or subpaniculate; bracts small, 1–several-flowered. Male flowers with pedicels jointed; calyx closed in bud, later splitting into 2–5 valvate lobes; petals (4-)5, short, free, imbricate; disk glands 5, free, alternating with the petals. Female flowers: pedicels jointed; sepals 5, free, subequal, imbricate; petals 5, short, free, imbricate; disk shallowly cupular, with small lobes; ovary 3-locular, with 1 ovule per loculus. Fruits 3-lobed, dehiscing septicidally into 3 bivalved cocci; endocarp thinly woody. Seeds with crustaceous testa; endosperm fleshy; cotyledons broad, flat. Worldwide: One species in eastern Africa.
