Description

Chinaka is one of the dominant hills in the generally high altitude area of granite peaks and outcrops near Juliasdale. It consists of two peaks rising up to just over 2000 meters. Between them there is a narrow saddle and ravine with patches of mist-belt evergreen forest. Otherwise the base and rocky slopes contain a mosaic of miombo woodland dominated by either Brachystegia spiciformis or B. tamarindoides, some grassy areas with groves of Acacia abyssinica and large areas of bare granite rock and shallow soil depressions, waterlogged by seasonal seepage. On the lower slopes there are small cultivated areas containing a vinyard. Although Chinaka itself is still largely in a good ecological state, some of the forest fringes have been damaged by fire and there are influences from the surrounding areas, where there are large infestations of Silver-wattle (Acacia dealbata), pine (Pinus patula) and Lantana camara.
