The Park covers an area of 76,000 ha (760 square km) of incredible natural beauty and biodiversity.

The Park was formed in 1981 and was the first Park to be formed under the newly formed Zimbabwe. The Park was officially opened by His Excellency President RG Mugabe in 1981.

From 2000 to 2010 the Park took a severe negative battering and the wildlife was decimated. However, since then the efforts of National Parks and Pioneer Corporation Africa which formed a joint venture have transformed the situation.

Many species of animal have been translocated into the Park and lodges and campsites have been developed to encourage tourism.
