Biography

The following details of the life of Gretel Dehn were supplied by Stefan Dressler of the Senckenberg Forschungsinstitut in Frankfurt in November 2016.

She was born in Karlsruhe on 5 February 1884 as Gretel Schenkel. Her father was Badian minister for the Interior. She was trained at the Karlsruhe Art Academy as a painter. She married Gustav Dehn but divorced him in 1934. Her former husband, who was Jewish, emigrated in 1939 to Ecuador while she emigrated in 1934 to South Africa and lived with her son near Cape Town. She later, (1948?), left South Africa for Rhodesia where she became a planter (farmer?). She died on 19 March 1961 in Resthaven.
