Description:
Densely tufted perennial with hairless culms up to 210 cm high. Leaves narrowly linear, up to 30 cm long, rigid, hairless or pubescent beneath; margins scabrid; basal sheaths hairless to hairy beneath. False panicle 15–30 cm long, diffuse; spatheoles narrowly lanceolate, 2.5–5 cm long, hairless or hairy along the margins, rarely all over; peduncles a little shorter than the spatheoles, with stiff bulbous-based yellow hairs; racemes 1.5–2 cm long, 2–4-awned per pair, dark purple; raceme-bases unequal, the superior 1.5–4 mm long, purple, entire or with a bidentate appendage 1–3 mm long. Spikelets 6–10 mm long, terminating in a bristle 1–5 mm long.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: newtoniiafter Francisco (Francis) Xavier Oakley de Aguiar Newton (1864-1909), British-born Portuguese botanist and plant collector.
Habitat: In grassland on stony hillsides, dambos and wooded grassland.
Altitude range: 1070 - 1700 m

Worldwide distribution: Widespread in Tropical Africa and SOuth Africa, Madagascar, Thailand, Indo-China and Indonesia.
