Description:
Perennial herb, 20-50 cm tall, growing from corms, usually solitary but sometimes in clumps. Leaf single, linear, 9-15 mm wide, channelled below, shorter than the stem at flowering time, much longer later. Stem unbranched. Flowers blue-purple with yellow nectar guides. Outer tepals lanceolate, 4-6.5 cm long, spreading to slightly reflexed. Inner tepals lanceolate, 3.5-4.5 cm long, erect.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: schimperi: named after Wilhelm Schimper, explorer and collector, particularly in Ethiopia.
Habitat: In grassland, vleis and marshy places.

Worldwide distribution: Angola, Nigeria, Cameroun, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
