Description:
Terrestrial herb, 15 - 65cm. Foliage leaves on a separate sterile shoot. Leaves along the flowering stem sheathing. Inflorescence fairly dense with long, leaf-like bracts, often reddish. Flowers white, variably tinged with pink at the apices of the flower parts. Petals and sepals deflexed in older flowers. Lip forming a hood with a wide mouth; spurs 3-4.5cm, rarely 5cm long, mostly tucked behind the bracts.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: longicauda: long-tailed, referring to the long spurs
Habitat: Montane grassland; often a pioneer along road sides and other areas, which have been disturbed before.
