Description:
Erect, sparsely-branched annual herb, up to 1 m high. Most parts with long, fiercely stinging hairs. Leaves broadly ovate to triangular, 4.5-15 cm long, 3-veined from the base; apex often caudate; margin with 10-18 large triangular teeth. Inflorescences branched, up to 30 × 10 cm, unisexual or bisexual. Flowers unisexual; male flowers in separate inflorescences in the lower leaf axils or on the lower part of bisexual inflorescences; female flowers in inflorescences in the upper leaf axils.
Notes: This is one of the most fiercely stinging nettles in our flora.

Habitat: In understorey of forest, usually in rocky places.
Altitude range: 900 - 1950 m

Worldwide distribution: Fairly widespread in tropical Africa from Nigeria to Uganda and South to Angola, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
