Common names:

Shrubby herbaceous plant, up to 3 m. Leaves opposite, oblanceolate to obovate, one leaf often larger than the other, both surfaces with long hairs, the hairs on the underside usually much softer; margins serrate. Inflorescences long pendent spikes in the upper leaf axils. Flowers unisexual in small clusters on the same spike.
Derivation of specific name: macrophylla: big-leaved
Habitat: In the understorey of evergreen forest in moist rocky places.
Altitude range: 300 - 1600 m
Flowering time:Jan - Feb
Worldwide distribution: Widespread in tropical Africa, tropical Asia and Indonesia.
