Description:
Woody plant with stems up to 1-1.5 m long. Leaves mostly opposite; petiole 4-10 mm long; lamina 2-8 × 1-4 cm, green to slightly glaucous, usually obovate-elliptic to obovate-elliptic. Umbels 2-4-flowered, borne in axils and at older nodes. Calyx 1-1.5 mm long, saucer-shaped. Corolla glabrous; tube 2.7-3.2 cm long, dull red, generally with whitish spots, the head of the buds turning greyish-black; bud heads angled or narrowly winged; lobes 7-9 mm long reflexed.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: forbesii: named after John Forbes (1799-1823), an English plant collector and naturalist. As representative of the Horticultural Society of London he visited the Cape in 1822. He died on the Zambezi River in Mozambique the following year.
Habitat: In dry mixed woodland and bushland, occasionally in miombo and mopane, on a wide variety of hosts, commonly Acacia, Combretum, Sterculia and with an aberrant form occurring on Uapaca.
