Synonyms: Popowia obovata (Benth.) Engl. & Diels
Common names: Northern dwaba-berry (English)
Frequency: Common
Status: Native
Description:
Scrambling shrub or very small tree. Leaves alternate, obovate, bluish-green with conspicuous pale veins, velvety when young. Flowers solitary, terminal or above the leaf axils, cream to greenish yellow, fleshy.
Notes: This species in leaf resembles closely Bridelia mollis (Phyllanthaceae). However, species in the Annonaceae have leaves which are aromatic when crushed and also do not possess stipules, which the Phyllanthaceae do. Furthermore, the leaves of Friesodielsia are usually obovate (ovate to obovate in B. mollis). The flowers and fruits of the two species are of course completely different.
Derivation of specific name: obovata: with obovate leaves
Habitat: Most often in riverine vegetation, but also on termite mounds and in rocky granite kopjes, sometimes in normal woodland.
Altitude range: Up to 1300 m
Flowering time:Nov - Feb
Worldwide distribution: Angola, southern DRC, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe
Mozambique distribution: N,Z,T,MS
Growth form(s): Climber, tree, liane, shrub over 2 m.
