Description:
Scrambling shrub or woody climber, armed with sharp, paired hooked thorns. Branches often distinctly zigzag, densely covered in rusty hairs, particularly when young. Leaves (narrowly) elliptic-oblong to oblanceolate, up to 6 cm long, leathery, rounded and often emarginate at the apex, sparsely pubescent or almost hairless. Flowers on leafless side branchlets, resembling spikes or racemes. Sepals densely rusty hairy on the outside; petals whitish. Stamens c. 8, up to 1 cm long. Fruit spherical, 6-15 mm in diameter, purple-black when ripe.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: fascicularis: clustered, referring to the clustered flowers.
Habitat: Occurring in dry deciduous woodland.
