Description:
Very large tree. Bark greyish-brown, fairly smooth; large trees often buttressed at the base Leaves with 12-23 pairs of pinnae; leaflets in 38-67 pairs per pinna, linear-oblong, very small, less than 1 cm long; rhachis with a stalked gland between each pair of pinnae. Flowers in axillary spikes up to 19 cm long, white to yellow. Pods slender, up to 32 cm long, flat, splitting on one side and opening out flat. Seeds up to 7.5 cm surrounded by a reddish papery wing.

Derivation of specific name: buchananii: after John Buchanan (1855 – 1896), Scottish horticulturist, missionary, farmer and plant collector in Malawi, who became Acting British Consul to Central Africa. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Buchanan_(settler).
Habitat: In evergreen forest, often near streams.
