Description:
Woody shrub up to c. 3.5 m tall. Leaves with 10-17 pairs of leaflets; leaflets oblong. Inflorescences terminal and in the upper axils, 2-8 cm long, not more than 1.5 times the length of the subtending leaves. Corolla cream, yellow, pale purple, mauve, blue or light violet, wings usually darker than the standard, 8-14 mm long. Pods oblong to oblanceolate, 5.4-8 cm long, somewhat woody and inconspicuously tuberculate.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: schimperi: named after Wilhelm Schimper, explorer and collector, particularly in Ethiopia.
Habitat: On stony river banks, hill slopes and in riverine thickets.
Altitude range: 600 - 1250 m

Worldwide distribution: This subspecies only known from Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
