Description:
Prostrate or climbing perennial herb growing from a stout woody rootstock. Stems several, up to c. 2 m long, more or less hairless to densely pubescent. Leaves 3 foliolate; leaflets rhombic, eliptic to ovate, 1.5-8 cm long, almost hairless to pubescent, often slightly lobed, lateral leaflets only on the outside. Petiole 1.5-6 cm long. Flowers in lax racemes, flowers opening towards the evening. Standard creamish to deep yellow, more or less heavily veined reddish-purple outside. wings yellow; keel greenish-yellow, usually purple tipped. Pods oblong-sickle-shaped, 20-30 mm long, characteristically inflated when ripe, finely pubescent and glandular.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: sublobata: almost lobed.
Habitat: Along vleis and pans, in seasonally marshy grassland near rivers, wooded grassland, riverine vegetation and woodland; also along roadsides and in old cultivation.
Altitude range: 10 - 1300 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Widesptread in tropical Africa, Eswatini, South Africa, Madagascar and Comoro Islands. Also in Yemen.
