Description:
Deciduous shrub or small tree. Leaves alternate, oblong to narrowly elliptic, grey-green, margins entire. Flowers in terminal and axillary sprays on long stalks, pink and purple. The flowers are borne in great profusion when the leaves are still small, making a spectacular display. Fruit a small nut, bearing a single membranous wing.
Notes: The spelling of the species name, namely whether it should be longepedunculata or longipedunculata, appears to be controversial. Both names are in use by reputable publications. We understand that in the original publication, Mus. Senckenberg. ii. (1837) 275, Fresenius used the spelling longepedunculata and we have accordingly adopted that spelling on the website. We are grateful to Mrs Meg Coates Palgrave for drawing this to our attention.
