A tree up to 10·5 m tall; branchlets brownish, lenticellate. Leaves up to 50 cm. long, mostly 7–11-foliolate; petiole and rhachis brownish, up to 38 cm. long, hairless or shortly appressed-hairy; leaflets opposite, subopposite or alternate, elliptic or oblong-lanceolate, 5·5–13 cm long, somewhat leathery, with an often falcate apical point c. 1 cm long, midrib impressed and sometimes appressed-hairy above, raised beneath; margin conspicuously wavy; petiolules 3–7 mm long, grooved above. Inflorescences in terminal, pyramidal, many-flowered, branched heads up to 30 cm long, densely rufous-hairy. Flowers unisexual small, whitish green, with female flowers like the male but a little larger, some parts densely reddish-hairy. Fruit an ovoid fleshy drupe, 1.5-2 cm long, indehiscent, becoming wine red with blackish patches, borne in large drooping terminal heads.
Notes: Contact with this tree may result in a allergic rash like the American Poison-ivy (Toxicodendron radicans).
Derivation of specific name: ulugurensis of the Uluguru Mts in Tanzania, where the type was collected.
