Description:
Small evergreen tree. Bark grey, smooth with raised lenticels. Leaves opposite to sub-opposite, elliptic to ovate, up to 9-14 cm long, thinly textured, veining indented above, prominent below; margin finely toothed or scalloped. Flowers small and inconspicuous, in axillary clusters, greenish-white with a small fleshy disk, c. 2 mm in diameter. Fruit a capsule, c. 10 mm in diameter, finely hairy, green.

Derivation of specific name: usambarensis: of the Usambara Mountains, Tanzania
Habitat: In the understorey of evergreen forest.
