Description:
Small to medium-sized evergreen tree. Leaves opposite, sessile, successive pairs at right angles, elliptic, oblong to almost circular, crowded near the ends of branches. Flowers in branched terminal heads, creamy-white, sometimes pinkish, the large number of stamens being most conspicuous. Fruit an oval berry, up to 1.5 cm, deep purple to almost black when ripe, edible.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: cordatum: heart-shaped or cordate
Habitat: Usually growing close to water along streams and rivers; also on roadside banks in higher rainfall areas and in secondary forest.
Altitude range: 540 - 1660 m

Worldwide distribution: Uganda and the DRC southwards to Angola, the FZ area and South Africa
Mozambique distribution: N,Z,MS,GI,M
