Description:
Herbaceous, aromatic, perennial shrub, up to c. 3.5m tall. Stema slightly succulent, 4-angled, often marked purple, hairy and glandular. Leaves triangular-ovate, 3-14 cm, sparsely to densely pubescent and with red sessile glands; margin crenate to serrate, sometimes weakly rolled under; periole 10-90 mm long. Inflorescences lax with 15-30-flowered verticils, 5 to 10 mm apart. Flowers blue to purplish, 10-22 mm long, pubescent on the lobes and with red sessile glands.

Derivation of specific name: shirensis: of the Shire area in southern Malawi
Habitat: In wet areas, clearings and along streamsides in woodland and forest.
Altitude range: (metres) 500 - 2100 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Angola, DRC, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
