Description:
Perennial herb with procumbent, much branched stems up to 20 cm long, mostly hairless except for a fine, minute pubescence on stems. Leaves opposite, ovate to lanceolate-ovate, 35 mm long; margin coarsely serrate-dentate; petiole about the same length as the leaf blade. Flowers solitary or in clusters of 2-3 together. Pedicels 3–5 mm long, decurved in fruit. Calyx 3–5.5 mm long; lobes narrowly linear-triangular, 2.5–5 mm long, with prominent mid-vein. Corolla white with lip marked pink to purple, or mauve, 4.5–9.5 mm long; tube c. 2.5–5 mm. long; upper lip broadly ovate with lobes sub-triangular; lower lip subcircular to broadly obovate with lobes rounded. Capsule ellipsoid-conical, 4.5–7 mm long, including a beak 1.5–2.25 mm long, hairless, pale yellow-brown.
Notes: Similar to Stemodiopsis rivae which is distinguished by stems and leaves being covered in dense stiff whitish hairs.
Derivation of specific name: buchananii: after John Buchanan (1855 – 1896), Scottish horticulturist, missionary, farmer and plant collector in Malawi, who became Acting British Consul to Central Africa. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Buchanan_(settler).
Habitat: In rock crevices.
Altitude range: Up to 1800 m
