Description:
Shrub or multi-stemmed small tree up to c. 3 m tall. Branches rigid, armed with short spines. Leaves in clusters on short lateral branchlets or on the spines, imparipinnate with 2-5 pairs of small obovate leaflets and a terminal leaflet, 5-9 mm long; rhachis winged; margin entire. Flowers appearing with the leaves, showy, golden yellow, c. 3.5 cm in diameter, petals wrinkled along the edges, solitary or in few-flowered clusters among the leaves. Fruit a flattened slender capsule, c. 7 × 1.5 cm, pale brown with a sharply pointed tip, dehiscent.

Derivation of specific name: zambesiacum: of the Zambezi region
Habitat: In dry scrub, mopane woodland and on rocky outcrops and hillsides.
Altitude range: Up to 500 m

Worldwide distribution: Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Eswatini and Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
