Description:
Perennial, sometimes shrubby herb growing from a woody rootstock. Stems mostly erect, rarely scrambling or decumbent, up to 1.5 m tall, more or less densely velvety, usually also with scattered stalked capitate glands and longer hairs. Leaves opposite, ovate to elliptic, 3-10.5 cm long, more or less densely velvety on both surfaces, usually more densely along the veins below. Flowers in axillary 3-15-flowered clusters often congested towards tip of stems; bracts narrowly elliptic, up to 2 cm long, sometimes with capitate glands. Calyx usually with viscid glandular short hairs and longer non-glandular hairs. Corolla distinctly 2-lipped, pale mauve-purple to bluish-purple, usually with darker markings on lower lip and in throat, 14-35 mm long; lobes oblong, deflexed in lower. Capsule 8-12 mm long.

Habitat: In Brachystegia woodland, Combretum and Acacia bush, grassland and dry riverine thickets.
