Description:
Erect or suberect, perennial herb. Leaves winged, petiolate, broadly ovate; margin serrate. Inflorescences densely clustered on peduncles 1-9 cm long. Flowers white with a yellow centre, borne amongst large leaf-like bracts with spiny margins.
Notes: It differs from C. cirsioides by the more erect habit and the normally much longer pedunculate inflorescences. Occasionally peduncles in this species may be short but it can also be recognized by the dorsal calyx lobe which is 2-3 mm wide and distinctly wider than the other lobes.

Habitat: In many types of woodland, grassland, riverine forest and on rocky hills.
Altitude range: 100 - 1300 m

Worldwide distribution: Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, DRC, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Caprivi-Namibia, Botswana, Eswatini and South Africa.
