Description:
Shrub or small evergreen tree. All parts glabrous. Leaves opposite, simple, narrowly elliptic, up to 10 cm long, shiny green, leathery; domatia absent; stipules ovate, 2-5 mm long, falling early. Flowers in pendunculate, branched, axillary heads; corolla c. 7 mm long, creamy-white; lobes reflexed. Fruit spherical, black when ripe, crowned with the remains of the calyx.

Derivation of specific name: supra-axillare: supra-axillary, i.e. arising above the axil
Habitat: In woodland, riverine and lowland forest.
Altitude range: 20 - 900 m
Flowering time:Oct - Dec
Worldwide distribution: Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Eswatini and Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Also In Aldabra and Madagascar.
