Description:
Shrub or small tree to 9 m with lenticellate bark. Leaves petiolate; lamina narrowly obovate to narrowly elliptic, glossy, hairless, with 5-25 lateral veins on each side of the midrib. Inflorescences lax, axillary heads. Pedicels 3-8 mm. Corolla: tube 4-8 mm, white or greenish-white; lobes 0.8-1.8 mm. Fruits with one or both carpels developing; carpels 5-10 mm, ellipsoid.

Derivation of specific name: mombasiana: of Mombasa, Kenya
Habitat: In riverine and lowland evergreen forest; coastal zone on sandy soil.
